Solar Energy and its Benefits

The sun has to keep shining to sustain life here on earth, and as long as it does we have a ready made source of energy that can be utilised for our electricity needs.

There has been great advances made in solar power technology over recent years, most of us will use devices like calculators that are powered by solar cells and with these advances it is easy to imagine a world with solar powered homes, cars, and many other electrically powered machinery and devices. Converting to solar power makes sense as we look fro ways to improve our environment by reducing the use of fossil fuels.

There are some obvious benefits in using solar power. It is free, it doesn't harm the environment and there is an endless supply available. The costs involved in the harvesting and storage of solar energy are not too high and the world's demand for electricity can at least be met in part by electricity produced from solar power.

The cost of solar heating is less than that of electric. Spiralling conventional fuel bills make solar power an attractive alternative. Once you have committed the initial outlay of money to buy your solar panels and heating system the money you save on fuel bills will soon recover the initial costs. In remote or underdeveloped areas and countries solar power can be a great alternative, providing heating, cooking and electricity.

Solar power can also be used in other areas like desalination units where fresh drinking water is scarce or unavailable. Solar energy is used to evaporate brine and leave salt crystals in the bottom of the vessel. The water is then condensed and moved to another vessel where it becomes drinkable.

Because sunlight is only available during the day and our demand for power can be at any time including night, a backup power source may need to be in place.
However there are battery operated systems that can store solar power for later use.
