U.S Women Lack Lung Cancer Awareness
22/Sep/2006: A recent survey by the United States National Lung Cancer Partnership (NLCP) on more than 500 women has revealed that American women are not aware of the severity of lung cancer or how they can be affected by them.
According to the NLCP, 70,000 out of 80,000 women who suffer from lung cancer die every year. The statistic is truly alarming as it reveals that lung cancer causes more deaths than the combination of uterine, breast and ovarian cancers.
Regina Vidaver, the executive director of the NLCP said that "This survey is a current snapshot of women's attitudes and beliefs about lung cancer, and it's frightening -- especially considering the extensive media coverage on the topic after Peter Jennings' and Dana Reeve's deaths. Women need to know the truth about lung cancer,"
The survey also revealed some interesting facts such as only 41% of women know that the leading cancer killer is the lung cancer; 60% of women have the misconception that secondary smoking is the number two cause of lung cancer when it is actually exposure to radon gas and only 18% of women know that the majority of lung cancer patients under the age of 40 category is women.
Many women incorrectly believe that a standard screening test is available to detect early stage of lung cancer. Dr. Joan Schiller president of the NLCP had this to say "Lung cancer is often perceived as a man's disease, yet it affects tens of thousands of women, and we're very concerned that women seem to be in the dark when it comes to the facts about lung cancer and the significant impact lung cancer can have on their lives,"
