Women at Higher Risk of Lung Cancer
22/Sep/2006: The July issue of Journal of the American Medical Association has reported than women who smoke have higher chances of developing lung cancer compared to men.
However their chances of survival are higher than men. Dr. Norman Edelman who is the chief medical officer of the American Lung Association said that even though this information is not new it is however important.
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the number 1 cancer killer in both genders and surprisingly in women; lung cancer fatality is higher than breast and colon cancer combined.
The major problem is that lung cancer cannot be detected early. It is normally detected when patients go in for other check-ups.
However there is a new promising technology which is still in its testing stage called Spiral CT screening or computed tomography that may be able to detect lung cancer earlier. Dr. Claudia I.
Henschke of Cornell University who is the leading proponent of this technology had conducted a test between 1993 and 2005 on both men and women over the age of 40 with a history of smoking.
Lung cancer was successfully diagnosed in 2.1% of the women and 1.2% of the men. Even though it is evident that women are more prone to lung cancer, it is still not clear why there is a vast difference between the genders.
