Women’s Stroke Risk Reduced by Healthy Lifestyle

22/Sep/2006: A study on more than 37,600 women from 1993 who were 45 years and older has finally brought in the results which were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The study reports that women, who lead a healthy lifestyle which means regular exercise, healthy diet with moderate alcohol consumption and absolutely no smoking, reduced the risk of stroke.

The women were monitored for around 10 years out which 450 suffered strokes.

The study reveals that 4.7% of the women with health index points of 17 to 20 were at lower risk of suffering from stroke compared to women with low index points of 0 to 4. The higher the health index point the healthier the woman is.

Healthy behavior in this context refers to exercising more than 4 times a week, never smoking, and alcohol consumption of 4 to 10.5 drinks per week, eating a healthy diet and having a body mass index (BMI) of less than 22.
