Stress Eating More Common in Women than Men

22/Sep/2006: A British study has shown that women are more likely to indulge in unhealthy habits than men. Women tend to smoke, snack on high fat and high sugar foods and drink more caffeine when subjected to long hours of work.

The study was funded by the Economic & Social Research Council and conducted by the University of Leeds in UK.
Researcher Dr. Daryl O’Connor and his colleagues had a conducted a study on the effects of stress on eating habits in 422 people.

The study reports that those who experienced minor stressful situations like having arguments, losing keys or missing a deadline showed more consumption of snacks between meals and less vegetables.

Snacking under stress is normally referred to as ‘emotional eater’ and these individuals are more vulnerable to turn to food as an escape route from the situation. O’ Connor also added that ‘our findings are disturbing in that they show stress produces harmful changes in diet and leads to unhealthy eating behaviors’.
