Anorexia Nervosa Fashionably Thin
22/Sep/2006: Anorexia Nervosa literally means "nervous loss of appetite" but this is in fact misleading, in actual fact people who suffer from anorexia do not in fact have a loss of appetite at all. Those suffering from this affliction are actually fearful of gaining weight, rather they see themselves and convince themselves they are overweight.
Anorexia effects roughly 100,000 people, it is often thought to be a disease that affects only young girls but time has shown it occurs in both men and women of any age.
However the majority of sufferers are young girls between the age of 15 and 18, statistics suggest a startling percentage of 1 in every 100 teenage girls will become obsessed with there weight and develop Anorexia to some extent.
Fashionably Thin
An alarming statistic maybe but when you stop and think about it, "thin is now supposedly fashionable". Our TV's show waif like figures dancing in the latest music videos, models strut down the catwalk not only showing the very latest fashions but also showing painfully thin frames.
"Thin has become fashionable". Teenage girls of course being at this impressionable age follow suit so is it surprising for statistics to show 1 in every 100 teenage girls between the age of 15 and 18 will develop anorexia.
Through The Looking Glass
You or I look at the person and we see a nicely shaped young woman developing, the anorexic already having developed a deep fear of being overweight will look at them selves through the mirror and see a totally different viewpoint.
Left to fester the disease intensifies to the point where they actually look in the mirror and see themselves as being overweight when in actual fact they are painfully thin.
Realisation
The significant factor in the treatment of anorexia is realisation, admitting and finally looking into the mirror and seeing what the rest of us see. Once this has been established the first and most important step on the road to recovery is the anorexics physical health.
The person by know may be vastly under weight and look ill. A natural eating pattern needs to be established which slowly will bring them from any further danger then secondly the psychological side to the illness can be treated.
Understanding on the part of family and friends is also an important factor on the road to recovery it is no longer just a "fad" to be thin this person is going through; by now if the illness has been left untreated it may have developed into a deep psychological phobia.
Anorexia can become a serious and sometimes deadly disease and the phrase "dying to be thin" can mean just that.
