Controlling Cholesterol – Eat soy protein foods

23/Sep/2006: Soy protein, a storage protein held in protein bodies in soybeans, present in bean curd, soy milk and in other soy protein foods, is found to be beneficial to the heart. Replacing food rich in saturated/trans-saturated fat and cholesterol, with soy protein foods can control ‘bad’ cholesterol in the body and increases ‘good’ cholesterol essential for the well being of our body.

A study carried out by the Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, supports this view and envisages that soy protein should be a part of our diet, to prevent and control high blood cholesterol levels. The findings of this study are published in the ‘The American Journal of Cardiology’.

Kristi Reynolds, assistant professor of epidemiology and a team of his colleagues carried out this study. The team analyzed data taken from 41 different studies carried out earlier, on the effects of soy protein on blood cholesterol levels. The studies analyzed by this team were controlled trials carried out on 1,756 adult participants during the period 1982 to 2004.

Soy proteins is widely used in foods like imitation meat, salad dressings, soups, desserts, cheeses, beverage powder, breads, pastas, cereals, toppings and in pet foods. Off late, the popularity of soy protein has increased with its wide use in food and other health products.
