Anorexia: Playing God

How often have we heard the phrase "size doesn't matter" but is that really true or do we just persuade ourselves it doesn't. For the majority of people size doesn't matter we look around in the world and there are plump round faced people in loving happy relationships then there are thinner framed people in the same happy relationships.

People of all shapes and sizes, it's life, it would be a pretty boring place if everyone in the world had the same shape, the same colour hair, the same colour eyes.
Today we have the ability to change ourselves and how we look to a vast extent. The colour of our hair can be changed from platinum blonde to black within a half hour, a quick trip to the local pharmacy or supermarket and the shelf is adorned with any colour you choose to be.

We can pop into the opticians an examination and a short time later we can walk out with totally different colour eyes from a huge choice of coloured contact lenses. Not happy with the size of your breasts then change them, a visit to the Doctor and a few hundred dollars out of your pocket you too can look like "Pamela Anderson".

Today we change almost every aspect of the body; In this day and age we are never happy with what "God gave us". We actually have the option of playing God and totally changing into the person we want to be, not the person we were born to be.

How far will that go? It's something we all do to an extent, though for the majority of us we make just small changes to ourselves, a simple haircut or we lose a few pounds in weight. But is it really to make us feel better about ourselves or do we do it for the sake of others, or how we think we should look.

Have we become obsessed with striving for "perfection", seeking the ideal? Who defines the ideal? For the young woman growing up today its very often "pop stars" or "film stars" that define this ideal, even there own friends or boyfriends.

In this day and age there is however a more serious and worrying side to becoming this "ideal" person, Anorexia Nervosa, it is something that has always been around but with the ever increasing pressures on the young people of today it's come forth more and more.

In the desire to mimic the person we see as "ideal" we quickly fall into the trap of Anorexia. It might start simply by missing the odd meal, cutting out the candy, but so often it can quickly turn into an obsession.

Weight has been lost, most times in fact a vast amount has been lost but striving towards this perfection the sufferer can lose all sight and perception of reality. The anorexic will never reach perfection, they haven't the ability anymore to distinguish between "fat" or "thin" in there eyes they still look the same, overweight and they always will.

Unbeknown to them they have in fact crushed what they set out to achieve in reaching the "ideal". Changing our hair colour or eye colour is one thing, its harmless, it makes a change, but it can't kill us.

Unfortunately for some Anorexia does kill, we play God for the sake of vanity and in striving towards the "ideal" and some will pay the ultimate price.
