"DES Daughters" at substantial higher breast cancer risk

22/Sep/2006: Researchers writing for the August issue of the Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention journal have revealed that the so-called "DES Daughters" - women born to mothers who during their pregnancy used the anti-miscarriage drug diethylstilbestrol - are at substantial greater risk of getting breast cancer compared to women not exposed to the drug while in the womb.

Their study revealed that DES daughters over the age of 40 had a 1.9 times risk factor compared to those at the same age who were not exposed to the drug. The report also found that those over 50 are at even greater risk.

It is reported that over 2 million women in the USA were exposed to diethylstilbestrol which was prescribed to women during the 1940s up to the 1960s to prevent miscarriages.

Julie Palmer, Sc.D., professor of epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health, said:

"This is really unwelcome news because so many women worldwide were prenatally exposed to DES, and these women are just now approaching the age at which breast cancer becomes more common."

Researchers are urging women who know they have been exposed to the drug to get regular screening mammograms.
