Yoga is the best solution to atherosclerotic obstructions

26/Sep/2006: Changing lifestyles are putting more and more people at risk to coronary heart diseases, which is caused by unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle.

But according to ‘Coronary Atherosclerosis Reversal Potential of Yoga Life Style Intervention’, a research publication of Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy, in India, yoga is very effective in reversing the effects of atherosclerosis (a disease affecting the arterial blood vessel).

With stress, anxiety, tension, obesity, lack of exercise and reliance on unhealthy foods, becoming the order of the day, only yoga and neuropathy can provide reliable, cost effective and drugless therapies to overcome these problems. Yoga can also stabilize atherosclerotic plague, reducing the need for angioplasty and bypass surgeries.

A study headed by Dr. S C Manchanda in collaboration with the Adhyatma Sadhna Kendra, divided 42 male patients in the age group of 32 to 72 years, who were suffering from coronary heart diseases, in to two groups of 21 each. The division was based on the similarities in baseline characteristics of the patients. One group was treated with conventional medical therapy, while the other was given yoga lifestyle intervention. Angiography carried out on patients of these two groups after the treatment, showed that those who underwent yoga lifestyle intervention had marked improvements in countering the symptoms of angina, while the condition of others who underwent medical therapy, deteriorated.

The study also showed that patients who were in the yoga group showed improvements in body weight and psychological status, with the cholesterol levels in their bodies falling significantly. Those who received medical therapy did not show any improvements in the above parameters. The group that underwent medical therapy showed progression of coronary stenosis, while it regressed in some patients in the yoga group.

A few patients in the yoga group did not require revascularization procedures like bypass surgery and coronary angioplasty, which proved that the atherosclerotic plague became stable after the yoga intervention. The study was conducted between 1994 -1996 and it proved that yoga induces favorable effects on angina, body weight and fat levels in the body. The study also showed that yoga lifestyle intervention is quite effective even on patients with advanced coronary diseases.

The intervention consisted of Asanas, rejuvenating exercises, mediation, relaxation techniques, stress management, moral teachings and low-fat, high fiber vegetarian diet.
