Teenagers & problems with bullying

There is always at least one bully in school, there always has been and there always will be it’s a sad fact, bullying is rife not only in school but it is something which even adults in the workplace have to contend with.

Bullying today however is not strictly limited to physical bullying in the playground, with today’s modern technology the bullies now have more means at their disposal with which to bully victims. More modern methods of bullying are cyber bullying, this type of bullying entails the use of mobile phones using text messaging, the home computer via email and prank phone calls. This can be a particular vicious type of bullying as it is all mental cruelty rather than physical and mental cruelty can sometimes be so much harder to deal with.

Cyber bullying through text messages

The victim can receive several text messages per day when this type of bullying occurs, most of the time this type of bullying is done by friends that have fallen out. Girls do the majority of bullying of this type and it can be very upsetting, if you are a victim of text message bullying then the bully will almost certainly be close by and watching you for your reactions.

When you receive a text message try not to let your feelings show as this is only playing into their hands, keep the messages and don’t delete them. You should however never respond to text messages of this kind but calmly save them on your phone and tell an adult about it. Bullying is bullying no matter how it is done and it can be dealt with, you should always tell a parent about the problem and they will help you deal with it.

Prank phone calls

This type of bullying is usually done via mobile phones and the bully will make prank calls to your number perhaps many times a day, a prank call will usually consist of them calling you and then not talking or making weird or strange noises in the background.

You should try not to let this upset you as just as with text messaging the bully will almost certainly be somewhere nearby watching for your reaction. Again tell your parents and let them help you with the problem, your parents may suggest that you switch phones with them for the time being.

Bullying through email and instant messaging

This type of bullying is almost the same as sending messages by text but instead messages are sent via email or on instant messaging programmes, luckily this type of bullying is easier to deal with as you can block the people sending you messages by instant messaging and also block emails.

Again, you should never reply to any emails or messages sent this way but show your parents the messages and let them help you deal with this issue. If messages are being sent on school computers during I.T lessons then confide in your teacher and always keep the messages for proof.
