Body Dysmorphic Disorder & Anorexia

The sufferer of anorexia Nervosa will look into the mirror and see staring back at her a totally different person from the one you or I see. It doesn't matter how much weight has been lost or even if weight needed to be lost in the first place the anorexic will always see them selves as overweight.

This is what is medically described as Body Dysmorphic Disorder or BDD for short.
For the majority of us it can seem almost impossible for the anorexic to see them selves in this way, surely they can see in the mirror how thin they are, how they look so gaunt, they have almost become nothing more than skin and bone, how can they possibly look in the mirror and see them selves as fat?

Most of us will have some dislike about our selves, maybe we think our nose is too big, our hips too full, our breasts not big enough or maybe there too big? We all have something that we wish we could change, but our thoughts and feelings don't usually reach the point where we obsess about them.

We let go of our thoughts, the anorexic isn't able to as easily. They become obsessed with how they look and this affects how they feel about themselves to the point where they are completely convinced they are still over weight.

It quickly becomes a burden but one which the sufferer readily and willingly accepts to the point of ever increasing strain on there health. The flaw or imperfection only exists in the mind of the anorexic but it is with such conviction this flaw resides the anorexic will go beyond all sense of normal reasoning, in fact they are no longer capable of normal reasoning.

Of course the sufferer of anorexia isn't able to see this and help must be sought. Very often the sufferer will not even admit to them having a problem or illness and to even begin on the road to recovery this is the most crucial step required on there part.

The anorexic will see them selves and believe utterly that they are still overweight so therefore it must be true. Probably convincing them to see them selves in reality, how the rest of us see them will be the single hardest step to be taken but only after taking this step can a recovery be made.
