Women over 40 are at risk to insulin resistance
28/Sep/2006: Women, who are over 40 years of age and fat around their waists, with a family history of diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, are prone to a condition called insulin resistance (a condition that often leads to type 2 diabetes).
Since this condition has no clear symptoms, most of the people who suffer from it, hardly realize that they are on the path to diabetes or heart diseases. Some estimates suggest that nearly half of all overweight and obese American adults are ‘insulin-resistant’, which makes this condition a growing national problem.
Women with a family history of diabetes or heart diseases should eat healthier food and exercise regularly, to elude these diseases, which happens to be the top killers in United States. Audrey Sheppard, chief executive of the National Women’s Health Resource Center feels that there is very little awareness among women on conditions like insulin resistance, which are really threatening women over 40 in U.S.
Women add a lot of fat around the waists in the years leading to menopause, due to hormonal changes within the body, which trigger hot flashes and end menstruation. According to an expert, women with waistline over 34 inches are at risk to insulin resistance.
Dr. David Katz, co-founder of the Yale Prevention Research Centre said that building up of fat in liver and other vital organs, leads to insulin resistance, a condition in which insulin can no longer inject enough glucose in to the body’s cells for fuelling them. This elevates the level of glucose in the blood, which ultimately causes metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes or heat diseases.
Dr. Katz added that this condition is affecting million of adults and an increasing number of children suffering from obesity, in United States. He feels that insulin resistance is an enormous problem, which has just started to surface in U.S. Women who had diabetes during pregnancy or who had a baby that weighed over nine pounds, are also at a higher risk to insulin resistance.
