Rheumatoid Arthritis Risk Higher in Women Smokers

22/Sep/2006: A US study has reported that smoking doubles the probabilities of women developing rheumatoid arthritis even if they do not have the genetic risk (HLA-DRB1 SE) factor for the disease.

The new study which was published in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases was based on comparison made between 115 postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis and 466 women who did not have the disease.

Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco however found that women who already had the HLA-DRB1 SE gene did not show an increased risk despite smoking.

The study may not be that conclusive because it was restricted to only older white women hence the results may or may not vary from women of different ethnicities.
