Preeclampsia Risk Reduced by Multivitamins
22/Sep/2006: A recent study by doctors from the University of Pittsburg has shown that women who took multivitamins before and during the first trimester of pregnancy considerably reduced the risk of developing preeclampsia.
The study which appears in the American Journal of Epidemiology reported that women who took multivitamins regularly showed a 45% reduction in preeclampsia risk.
Preeclampsia which is the number one cause of premature delivery and fetal death, affects 7% of first pregnancies. Signs of preeclampsia include high blood pressure, swollen hands and feet and protein in the urine.
In the US nearly 15% of preterm babies were due to preeclampsia.
Researcher Lisa Bodnar said "Our data show that women who are not overweight before pregnancy and who used multivitamins at least once a week before conception and in the first three months of pregnancy reduced their risk of preeclampsia by a striking 72 percent compared to those who didn't take a multivitamin during this time period,".
The combination of various nutrients in multivitamins may be the reason for its effectiveness however it is rather alarming that multivitamins seem to have no effect on overweight women.
Probably the nutrient value is inadequate to overcome the challenges of overweight women.
