One in three American teenagers are unfit

05/Oct/2006: A study carried out by University of South Carolina, has found that about a third of American Teenagers in the age group of 12 to 19, fail to clear treadmill tests measuring heart and respiratory health. Obesity and sedentary lifestyles are to be blamed for this new development, according to the researchers involved in the study.

3,287 boys and girls participated in this study conducted between 1999 to 2000. Under this study, the participants were interviewed in their homes and then underwent treadmill exercise test, at an examination centre.

The treadmill exercise test involved a two-minute warm up, two to three-minute periods of exercise and a two-minute relaxation time. The study found that one third of the boys and girls who took part in the experiment failed to meet the current standards of cardiorespiratory endurance.

Based on their findings the researchers concluded that, poor physical fitness during the adolescence tend to affect the fitness level of individuals in adulthood, making them vulnerable to chronic health problems during adulthood.

The study also found that teenagers who have a high body mass index (a statistical measure of person’s weight scaled according to their height) and low levels of physical activity coupled with sedentary lifestyle, are likely to have low cardiorespiratory fitness. The findings of this study were published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Obesity, sedentary lifestyle and low physical activity are making the younger generation vulnerable to a host of diseases like, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders etc., and if nothing is done to reverse this trend, the future generation could be at the mercy of these diseases.
