Anorexia Dealing with Emergency Situations

For the majority of the time the anorexic is no different from any other person but there can be the occasion when due to there illness particularly if they have been ill with an eating disorder for any length of time they may need emergency treatment.

Being able to recognise these times and know what to do should an emergency crop up is crucial and could very well save the life or your friend or loved one. The person suffering from anorexia for any length of time will have a lack of nutrients in there body, this can lead to dizzy spells and fainting.

A lot of the time this is just one of the aspects that the sufferer has come to expect and has learned to live with but occasionally it's more serious and needs to be dealt with as such. If you're loved one or friend actually passes out it could mean they are dehydrated or have an imbalance of chemicals within there body which can lead to heart failure and even death.

Therefore is it always better to be safe than sorry and should they pass out it is better that medical help be sought. If the sufferer of anorexia is know to make them selves sick after eating then the digestive system may have been damaged and it is possible for the oesophagus to actually rupture.

There is no clear way of telling if this could be the case with a loved one or friend as it varies greatly from person to person and indeed it may never happen but there is always the possibility that it could.

One indication that this might be the case is the sign of blood in vomit, if this happens or if you are in any doubt at all, please seek medical help as soon as possible. Most anorexics are often suffering from depression and suicide attempts can be made, if your family member or friend threatens this on regular occasions it can be hard to determine if there threats hold any danger.

The threat may or may not be an honest one there is no way of possibly knowing so every threat must be dealt with seriously and treated accordingly as an emergency. At times you may declare the state to be an emergency and you may make the decision of taking your friend or relative to hospital something which they totally disagree with.

This may be due to the fact that they feel frightened or that they will lose control over the situation, if this is the case reassurance that you are acting in there best possible interest is the only option available to you. Above all if you think that it is an emergency then deal with it as such.
