Aging of skin is more rapid in women
06/Oct/2006: A study carried out by researchers from Germany's Freidrich Schiller University in Jena and the Fraunhofer Institute of Biomedical Technology in St. Ingbert, using a new laser-based technique, found that women’s skin age faster compared to men’s.
The new laser-based technique used in this study measured the damage caused by sun exposure and aging on the skin, using infrared lights. Researchers used this technique for imaging the proteins, collagen & elastin and for studying the deep layers of the skin, to measure the rate of aging. Collagen and elastin are group of proteins found in the connective tissues of the body (like the dermis, blood, cartilage and bone).
Disintegration of the proteins, collagen and elastin, causes wrinkles and roughness in the skin and the imaging of these two proteins showed that women lose them faster than men. The researchers involved in the study said that the loss of collagen was much higher in women’s skin than in men’s, which proves that aging of skin is more rapid in women.
Collagens are responsible for the strength of the skin and its production in our body decreases with age. Current techniques used for studying the collagen network in the dermis, requires for an invasive removal of a sample tissue from the body, which is then examined under a microscope. But the new laser-based technology used in this study is non-invasive and could be used for testing anti-aging cosmetic products in the future, apart from being used for studying skin diseases that might affect the collagen network in the dermis.
