Epilepsy Drug May Cause Birth Defects.
22/Sep/2006: A research on more than 300 pregnant women has found that 20% of them who had taken the epilepsy drug valproate suffered miscarriages or delivered babies with birth defects.
The rate was however much lower in women who had taken different epilepsy drugs to control seizures.
The lead author of this study Dr. Kimford Meador who is the professor of neurology at the University of Florida and a fellow at the American Academy of Neurology said that "By the 1990s, it was pretty clear that women taking multiple anti-convulsive drugs had increased risks," Therefore it is highly advised that women of childbearing age should avoid epilepsy drugs in order to have a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby.
The study which was conducted on both American and British women showed there were fetal deaths or serious birth defects in 20% of the women who were on valporate, 11% on phenytoin, 8% on carbamazepine and 1% on lamotrigine. However all is not bleak because 90% of the women still went on to have normal healthy babies.
The full findings of the study were published in the August 8 issue of Neurology
