Girls eat more junk-food than boys
06/Oct/2006: A new survey of children and parents, has found that girls, who are considered to be more diet-conscious than boys, eat more junk-food than their opposite sex.
The survey conducted by the dried fruit firm Whitworths, found that many kids prefer food like biscuits, crisps or chocolates for breakfast and girls prefer more of these high caloric foods when compared to boys. Junk-foods have poor nutritional value and do not help in maintaining a balanced diet.
Both the sexes are estimated to spend 2 billion pounds on junk-foods, during a term time and girls spend 400 million pounds more than boys on these food items. Girls spend 1,219 million pounds on junk food in a term time, while the boys spend 797 million pounds on junk-foods in the same period.
Junk-foods high in fat & sugar and sedentary lifestyles are known to cause obesity in youngsters and health experts in UK fear that this new trend of preferring junk-food could lead to an obesity crisis in future, in this country. Dr. Sarah Brewer, a children’s nutrition doctor, said that a majority of girls are eating far too many high caloric snacks, to fill the hunger gap during schooldays and this trend contradicts the general belief in the society that girls are very diet-conscious to emulate their skinny role models.
More than one million children would be obese by 2010, with 19% of boys and 33% of girls being severely overweight, according to a prediction made by a government report, released recently.
