Probiotics for the Elderly

22/Sep/2006: Scientists believe that taking probiotics by those who are over the age of 60 can be extremely beneficial to combat bowel conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Probiotics which means ‘for life’ are products that contain live strains of ‘gut friendly’ bacteria that can help prevent deadly bacteria like E.coli and campylobacter from invading the bowels and help with food digestion instead.

Dr. Sandra McFarlane from the microbiology and gut biology group at the University of Dundee stated that as people got older the level of ‘friendly bacteria’ reduced and the disease causing bacteria increased. Those over the age of 60 are more prone to gastrointestinal infections and bowel conditions therefore there is a need for them to consume products like probiotics to reduce the risks. In fact probiotics can be consumed by all age groups who are on antibiotics. Probiotics are incorporated in daily food intakes like fruit juices, yogurts and in freeze-dried powders.

Consumers are however cautioned not to get cheated when purchasing probiotics because according to Professor Glen Gibson who is a professor of food microbiology at Reading University, half out of the 50 brands available in the UK are not up to the mark. Products by Nestle, Seven Seas, Danone and Yakult are safer and effective.
