Correcting breast asymmetry boosts self-confidence in young women

10/Oct/2006: A study presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) meeting in San Francisco, said that correcting ‘breast asymmetry’ through surgery in young women, can boost their self-confidence and quality of life.

Breast asymmetry is a condition in which one breast is larger than the other and it can be corrected either by using breast implants, to enlarge one breast to make it look similar in size to the other, or by performing breast reduction to reduce the larger of the two breasts, by removing the excess fat and skin through a surgery.

Dr. Walter Erhardt, the chairman of the ASPS’s public education committee, said that breast asymmetry is a common problem among women and most women have some degree of breast asymmetry. He added that severe breast asymmetry (where there is significant size difference between the two breasts) in women can lead to a host of problems in clothing, socializing etc., and it dents their self-esteem and self-confidence.

In some cases of breast asymmetry even the shape and the look of the breasts may differ markedly, giving an unbalanced look. However, Dr. Erhardt said that procedures like breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lift are very effective in correcting severe breast asymmetry and in creating balance between the breasts.

At the ASPS meeting, Dr. Elvio Garcia from the Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, reported the results of a study involving 35 women, who underwent surgery to correct breast symmetry. He said that he and his colleagues noted a remarkable improvement in the quality of life (measured by the Short Form Health Survey) after the surgery, in all the women involved in the study. The participants displayed statistically significant improvement in vitality, mental health and self-esteem, in six months after the surgery.

Surgeries to correct breast asymmetry, not only improve the physical appearance, but also enhances the self-confidence and self-esteem of the women who underwent the surgery, according Dr. Erhardt, who is vastly experience in this field.
