Top Tips for Saving Water

The growth in population and climate change are making increasing demands on our water supplies. It's important that we don't take this invaluable resource for granted and that we use water wisely to ensure there is going to be adequate supplies for everyone in the future.

Taking a five minute shower each day instead of a bath can save up to 400 litres a week while a dripping tap could waste as much as 90 litres a week. As you can see, with this type of waste happening in every household in the country it's important that we get into good habits now, as water conservation becomes will become a growing issue in years to come.

With just a little thought and modification in our every day lives we can all play a part in securing a future supply of water for generations to come. Here are some tips that you can put into practice.

Turn taps and faucets off properly, and change washers as soon as they begin to leak.

Insulate your water pipes. A lot of water is wasted when running while waiting for it to warm up.

Leave your heating on a low setting during cold weather when you go out. This lessens the chance of pipes freezing and bursts occurring.

Make sure everyone in the household knows where the main stop/shut off valve is located. This could save gallons of water if you are unfortunate enough to have a leak and are in danger of being flooded.

Use a bowl filled with water when preparing vegetables rather than running them under the tap.

If you boil an egg, save the water you use to water your houseplants.

When cooking, don't use a larger pan than is necessary, as this will use more water than is actually needed.

Don't use hot water when cold will do.

Never run your dishwasher without a full load. Not only does this save water, but it's more energy efficient too.

Turn water off while brushing your teeth until it's time to rinse.

When bathing pets do it outside in an area that is in need of watering.

Buy a water-butt and use to water plants. Rainwater is better for plants than tap water anyway.

Check any outdoor taps and hoses for leaks.

Use a broom to clean your driveway rather than a hose. You could save up to 80 gallons of water at a time by doing so.
