Deterring Pests Using Organic Gardening

Biological gardening is a good way to get rid of pests in the garden without using any chemicals or pesticides. There's no doubt pesticides work, but what other damage do they do to the natural ecosystem? Using an organic approach is much safer and working with nature means we can enjoy a healthier garden.

You should remember that not all pests are enemies to gardeners. Some insects break down organic matter while others are pollinators or natural predators that feed on the real enemies. For instance the lacewing lays eggs attached to leaves the larvae eat 200 - 300 aphids in their lifetime. Lady bug larvae eat 30 aphids per day and ground beatles feed on ground dwelling pests.

Using a companion planting technique uses the ability of certain plants to attract beneficial insects. What for you’ll need to provide to attract beneficial insects are Low growing plants as cover for ground beetles (thyme, rosemary, or mint), shady protected areas for laying eggs, Tiny flowers for tiny wasps, like plants such as fennel, angelica, coriander, dill, alyssum and clovers.

You will also need mixed flowers (daisy and chamomile) and mints (spearmint, peppermint, or catnip) to attract hungry wasps, hover flies, and robber flies

Herbs work really well as companion plants. They are advantageous because they attract both beneficial insects and repel pest insects at the same time and their fragrance and foliage make them good companions in both the vegetable garden and the ornamental border.
