How you can use herbs as remedies

The price of medicines can be very expensive and the cost to fill your bathroom cabinet with first aid and cold and flu remedies soon mounts up. But there is another way you can treat everyday ailments without it costing you too much.

Most people will already have a stock of herbs in the kitchen to use in cooking, but a lot of these same herbs have medicinal properties and can be used to cure many different ailments.

Basil-Basil has many medicinal uses, but usually is used to treat digestive disorders. It enhances digestion, is an aid for indigestion and helps ease stomach cramps. A tea made from Basil and peppercorns reduces fever and is efficient in treating colds and flu symptoms.

Cardamon- Chewing one or two cardamom seeds will freshen your breath. A tea made from cardamom will settle an acidic stomach.

Coriander- Can be applied externally to ease aching joints and rheumatism. It is a good stomach tonic and is effective in treating diarrhea and colic.

Fennel-Gargling with fennel tea will help ease a sore throat. Fennel seed, ground and made into a tea is given for fever, insect bites, dog bites, and flatulence.

Fenugreek-A herb commonly found in Indian cuisine Fenugreek can be made into a gargle to relieve a sore throat by mixing 1 tbsp. of pulverized seeds in 8 oz. of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, strain. Gargle 3 times daily every3-4 hours.

Ginger- Ginger and ginger ale are a common cure for nausea, it is also helpful in relieving symptoms of motion sickness. Try 1-2 cups of Ginger tea for breakfast to get rid of a hangover.

Rosemary- Often used externally Rosemary leaves cooked in wine or a salve made from Rosemary oil is useful for eczema, bruises, marks, scars and wounds.

Sesame Seeds- The crushed seeds are a good tonic particularly for the aged. Crushed seeds combined with a mixture of honey, ginger juice and a pinch of black pepper make a good cough medicine. Take 1 tsp three times daily.

Thyme- A poultice made from Thyme leaves will combat inflammation and infection. It is also helpful in easing the symptoms of sinusitis.

NB. It's worth noting that pregnant women should not take any herbal infusions or medicines without first consulting their doctor.
