Recovery of Ozone Layer Delayed – U.N. Reports
25/Aug/2006: After decades of damage it looks like the earth’s ozone layer is finally mending – slowly; reported the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the U.N. Environmental Program (UNEP).
They said that the earth’s protective layer which filters dangerous solar radiation, is expected to regain its pre1980 levels by 2049 over large areas of North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australasia and Africa. This report are based on the report by 250 scientists and will be issued next year on the effects of the Montreal Protocol 1987 which committed signatory nations ban on ozone harmful products.
Achim Steiner the executive director of UNEP said that the Montreal Protocol is effective based on the early signs of atmosphere healing. In a statement issued in Geneva and Nairobi, Steiner said that the delay in recovery shows that the ozone layer cannot be taken for granted and efforts must be maintained to reduce the usage of harmful chemicals.
However the ‘ozone holes’ over Antarctica will longer to heal. The expected year is 2065.
