Bacteria to the rescue!
08/Sep/2006: Want a cost effective method to clean up toxic waste? Simple. Just employ your own team of bacteria.
Recent reports by Australian scientists indicate that microbes found at old waste sites seem to be able to break down lethal soil and water cocktails created by waste petroleum and chlorine, making them human-friendly.
However, there is no single solution to heavily contaminated sites. Experts say, scientists first have to look for new types of bacteria, isolate them and enhance them in order for them to be able to make a remarkable effect. Meanwhile, other research organizations are in the process of enhancing certain isolated microbes – initial results show they are able to break down toxins faster.
Industrial contamination is one of the largest worldwide threats, with a number of countries facing staggering clean-up bills.
