Production of Ethanol from Cellulose to start within five years in U.S

08/Sep/2006: Distilleries producing ethanol from prairie grasses, trees and crop waste (sources of cellulose) should be operational in the next five years, according to the Mr. Samuel W. Bodman, Secretary of Energy, United States of America.

While answering to the questions of the press at a briefing with the Agriculture Secretary, Mr. Bodman said that he expects these distilleries to become fully operational within the next five years and the Department of Energy, which he heads, would issue loans to projects for distilling ethanol from cellulose at cheaper rates.

Ethanol cannot become an alternative to gasoline in U.S, unless and until its production is increased from its current levels. Currently ethanol is produced from Corn with the state of Iowa being the leading producer. The government and the scientists have been working on the ways to reduce the cost of distillation of ethanol from grasses and crop waste, which stays around $2.2 per gallon, double the cost required for distilling a gallon of ethanol from corn.

Many private companies are thought to have lowered the cost of production of cellulose ethanol to $1.5 per gallon, but the Energy Secretary would like to see this cost go down to $1.2 per gallon at par with the cost for extracting ethanol from corn.
