Destruction of farm lands
09/Sep/2006: Vast stretches of fertile land in Ga West District of Greater Accra region are fast disappearing in Ghana. Due to large scale demand for housing, influential farm owners are letting out their farm lands to sand wining.
Not long ago, peasant farmers tilled the lands to raise crops like maize, watermelon and cassava. Once the top soil is removed, deep trenches are allowed to stay on for a couple of months before selling the land to people for construction of houses.
The deep shallow lands are turning into puddles of waste breeding mosquitoes and spreading diseases in the nearby areas. Now, the inhabitants of the place, who once produced food crops in abundance, are facing food shortage.
