Move to cut down vehicular emission levels
10/Sep/2006: A number of initiatives to reduce vehicular emission levels introduced from time to time have failed to bring down the pollution levels in Indian city of Pune. A new U.S., India initiative with a grant of US$296,000 is aimed at reducing the emission levels of diesel-powered vehicles in Pune.
As part of the measures, diesel particulate filters and diesel oxidation catalysts will be made use of. The use of low sulfur diesel for reducing emission levels will also be taken up as part of the project.
The project is mainly looking at ways to reduce the vehicular emission levels with the development of new technologies. The aim is to test several new technologies to retrofit diesel engines to make them eco-friendly vehicles. The results generated by the project will be included in developing new diesel engines and in bringing necessary modifications in the existing vehicles.
