SeaWorld Fireworks Adding The Pollution
25/Aug/2006: SeaWorld suspended its nightly fireworks show in response to complaints that the pyrotechnics are polluting Mission Bay, it was reported Thursday.
SeaWorld, responding to complaints from San Diego Coastkeeper, will apply for a potentially precedent-setting permit from the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, which would regulate fireworks as a water pollutant.
SeaWorld has halted its fireworks since Sunday to avoid a lawsuit from San Diego Coastkeeper, which contends chemical and paper residue falling into Mission Bay constitutes a discharge of pollutants forbidden by the federal Clean Water Act.
Residue from spent fireworks shells consists primarily of heavy metals, including copper, which is toxic to marine life. SeaWorld is hoping to resume the show. It has applied for a special permit from the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board.
