Oil Spill in Philippines spare corals in the region
12/Sep/2006: The oil spill that polluted more than 300kms of coastline in the island province of Guimaras in Philippines has spared the hard corals spread over 47, 000 hectares of coastal area in southern Guimaras.
The spill was caused when an oil tanker went down in the rough waters off the island of Guimaras on 11th August 2006. On a request from Petron Corporation, the company which contracted the ill-fated tanker, a team of scientists from the Silliman University, carried out a weeklong expedition in the region, to ascertain to damage caused by the oil spill to the environment and to draw out a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for the region.
The team found no traces of oil spill on the corals along the shore line and believes that a high tide must have saved the corals when the oil from the spill reached the shores. This news was disclosed by Dr. Angel Alcala, director of the Silliman University Research and Environmental Management, who led this expedition, in an interview. Earlier, the team conducted coastal and underwater surveys in the affected areas to evaluate the damage caused by the oil spill.
The tourism industry in this region is overwhelmed by this oil spill, which is also threatening the livelihood of hundreds of fisherman living in this region.
