Global warming to melt beaches

12/Sep/2006: The increasing level of global warming is causing serious concern among people living in prominent seaside places in Spain. The global warming is expected to push up the sea levels by as much as 15 meters, resulting in seashores disappearing into the rising tide waves.

Some of the beaches will vanish altogether while the unprotected holiday resorts and homes face threat from the salt water.

At present, the global warming is estimated to have been resulting in melting of ice caps, forcing the sea level to increase by 2.5 mm around Spain every year. According to a study, by the year 2050, Spain is set to witness 12-15 cm increase in sea level and the northern Atlantic coast is set to witness the disastrous consequences.

Resorts along the Mediterranean coast are likely to report a loss of 10 meters of beach by 2050. This is going to threaten the Europe’s biggest nature reserve, Dóana National Park in south-west Spain as well. The continuing summer heat is causing severe trouble to people in 20 cities, which witnessed record monthly temperatures. And then, farmers are praying for autumn rains so as to prevent occurrence of drought for the third year in a row.
