Global warming may spread diseases!
12/Sep/2006: Well, the global warming is not only threatening the coastlines across continents, it is also set to cause spread of infectious diseases in several new areas. The warmer temperatures are likely to aid the growth of germs and viruses and spread diseases that are only limited to tropical areas to new cooler places.
A study found out that mosquitoes carrying dengue fever were earlier found to be limited to elevations of 3,300 feet, but recently they were observed at higher levels of up to 7,200 feet in Colombia’s Andes Mountains.
A number of diseases are reportedly spread by mosquitoes which predominantly survive in hotter climates. Similarly, the spread of bird flu, on the other, is mainly due to the loss of wetlands and also disease-causing migrating birds mingling freely with poultry. The warmer temperatures are likely to cause several other diseases like malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever and respiratory disorders more in all parts of the world. The global warming is said to be indirectly responsible for this health hazard happening in some of the advanced countries. However, the less developed countries are not better off either. The onset of monsoon is expected to increase the incidence of water-borne diseases and the vulnerable sections are most likely to become the victims of such mosquito bites.
