Arsenide poisons Chinese river

12/Sep/2006: In this latest incident, a river is contaminated by arsenide posing a serious threat to health of residents. A routine check on the quality of river water by the officials revealed the high levels of arsenide.

Alarmed by the contamination, the officials immediately halted water supply to Yueyang and nearby areas and provided water through fire tankers.

A chemical factory located at Linxiang let out the chemical into Xinqiang River and caused serious damage to the river. The officials estimated the arsenide levels in the river water at “10 times higher than official standards” and took immediate steps in alerting villagers about the water contamination.

Arsenide is colorless and tasteless compound and exposure for a long time may result in dermatitis, lung cancer and other health problems. Timely measures initiated by officials averted a major health problem in the area. Even though some of the local people are using the water for other purposes, so far there is no outbreak of any diseases as a result of the river water pollution. The authorities have also initiated measures to reduce the pollution impact by increasing the water level into the river system with the release of more water from the upper Tieshan reservoir.
