Arctic ice melting
14/Sep/2006: The NASA scientists have come out with strong evidence that reveals the melting of Arctic sea ice in winter at a faster rate than witnessed earlier. The rapid melting of ice is a pointer towards global warming and threatens the delicate ecosystem on the seafloor, the two studies of NASA reveal.
The scientists have observed that the Arctic sea ice melted in winter by 1.5 per cent per decade and in the last two years the rat is 10 to 15 times faster than normal. Another study by NASA pointed towards another disturbing factor – that of winter sea ice melt shrunk in eastern region by about 40 per cent in past two years.
The sea ice is melting even during winter at subzero temperatures due to warmer waters at the peripheral. The melting of ice is going to threaten the mammals in the oceans. The winter ice that melts in summer provides breeding ground for plankton, the bottom rung of the ocean’s food chain. And equally disturbing fact is the observation of a large water pool, north of Alaska, at an unexpected interior place. Though the impact global warming is disputed, the scientific findings of ice melt clearly points to the warmer climate causing untold damage to the environment.
