U.S Court fines Cognis for chemical spills
14/Sep/2006: A district court in United States slapped a huge fine on Cognis, a German based specialty chemical company, for negligently discharging toxic pollutants from its plant in Winton Place last December, which contaminated Mill Creek, a 26 mile stream running in Southwest Ohio.
The spill killed thousands of fish and dozens of migratory birds. Cognis reported the spill to the Environmental Protection Agency immediately and was involved in the clean up that followed.
In a deal with the federal prosecutors of the district court, Cognis agreed to plead guilty for their negligence and to pay $215, 000 in fines. Cognis will also be paying $200,000 to a community environmental group called Mill Creek Watershed Council and $10,000 to Raptor Inc., an organization that takes care of injured birds.
The spill occurred on 13th & 14th December, 2005, when 200 pounds of Isodecyl alcohol and Adipic acid (belonging to the class of Carboxylic acids) and 1,000 pounds of animal fats was discharged from the Cognis plant in Winton Place. Cognis produces ingredients from animal and vegetable fats, for a number of products. The company regretted for their negligence in this case and said that necessary steps have been initiated to prevent any such discharges in future.
