Spinach linked to E.coli outbreak

15/Sep/2006: Beware of E.coli, next time you try to eat fresh green spinach from the nearby convenience stores. The green leafy spinach, widely used in cooking in South Asia and in salads in the West, is linked to the outbreak of E.coli in the United States that has claimed one person so far.

According to the US FDA officials, scores of people were taken ill due to this in about eight states.
It is suspected that E.coli spread from bagged spinach to people, mostly who took the fresh leafy vegetable. The officials are worried that E.coli 0157 is a deadly bacterium that results in diarrhea and dehydration.

The officials are unable to link the outbreak to any particular region where the spinach is cultivated or brand or any seller. However, the officials received reports from eight states – Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Utah, New Mexico and Wisconsin and so far, 50 cases were reported. Genetic screening of people confirmed that all of them were affected by E.coli.

The special measures taken by several of the people like buy organic food are also of no help as it is organic and can come from cow manure, which is used as a fertilizer. According to officials, Americans are eating five times more fresh spinach than in 1970s and it is popular than ever.
