Tropical rain forests in trouble

15/Sep/2006: The tropical rain forests in Malaysia are in danger and falling prey to increased oil palm cultivation? These concerns expressed by environment groups from the U.S. and Europe are strongly refuted by the political leadership of Malaysia.

The lucrative bio-fuel projects are forcing the government to focus its attention on increased cultivation of oil palm plantation. The renewed focus on bio fuel is making several firms to promote fuel by blending with palm oil. The country, being the biggest oil palm producer, is trying to improve the yield and oil extraction techniques.

However, environment groups are skeptical about efforts to contain damage to tropical rain forests and suspect the destruction of vast tracts of land in Malaysia and Indonesia to meet the growing demand for bio fuel. According to information, Malaysia is also trying to develop bio fuels by blending with other crops and vegetables.

The demand for eco-friendly bio fuel is increasing all over the world as fears over global warming are moving policy-makers to consider use of bio fuel as an alternative to fossil fuels. In fact, fossil fuels are regarded as causing more pollution by releasing excess amounts of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases posing grave threat to the environment.
