Tackle Global Warming, now!
16/Sep/2006: According to Dr. James Hansen, a climatologist at NASA, we still have time to tackle global warming and to prevent catastrophic climate changes in future. Dr. James Hansen who is considered to be the most experienced of the climatologists in United States, said that the world still have a decade to initiate decisive actions against global warming, failing which it would see its temperatures rise by 2-3 degree centigrade, giving birth to a completely different planet.
Dr. Hansen feels that governments around the world should capitalize this period by cutting down greenhouse emissions and maintaining the increase in average global temperature at 1 degree centigrade. Global warming, if left unchecked, would melt ice sheets at poles increasing sea levels, which could ultimately devastate low-lying pacific islands and countries like Bangladesh. Rising sea levels could even inundate large cities like New York. The planet would also experience prolonged droughts, frequent heat waves, catastrophic floods and powerful storms that could make nearly 50% of animal and plant species to go extinct.
Dr. James Hansen, who heads the NASA’s Goddard Institute for space studies, blamed the U.S administration for trying to silence him and other scientists on their findings on climate change. He reiterated that the U.S government had messed up a golden opportunity to influence the world on climate change. United States, which is the largest polluter of the world, pulled out of the Kyoto Protocol in 2001, stating that cutting greenhouse gas emissions would harm the country’s economy.
