New fronts for wind energy production: China and India
21/Sep/2006: With China and India progressing fast in harnessing the wind power, companies that manufacture wind turbines are exploring the possibilities of marketing their products in these robust economies. Restrictions in developed nations like Australia, on the construction of wind farms have made these companies to actively seek markets elsewhere to sell their products.
Achim Hoehne, a manager in the engineering services company Parsons Brinckerhoff, said that China and India will be the biggest markets in the next decade for companies in the wind energy sector. CLP holdings of Hong Kong, Vestas Wind, the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer and Suzlon Energy Ltd., India, the largest company in its category in Asia, are expanding in China to capitalize the rising demand for their products.
China has been trying to reduce its dependability on fossil fuels and at the same time cut pollution, by developing alternative energy sources. China has added 500 megawatts of wind energy capacity in 2005, an increase of 66% when compared to the wind energy capacity in 2004. But the growth of wind energy capacity in the world’s largest wind market, Germany, was only 11% during the corresponding period. With plans of adding another 2,000 megawatts of capacity this year, China serves as an ideal market for investments in wind projects, compared to countries like Australia, where investments in wind projects have slowed down, as the government’s target for wind energy has already been met.
Dan Kofoed Hansen, managing director of the Australian Unit of Suzlon, said that many companies are positioning themselves to expand to China when markets really open up in this county. He added that China is still at its infancy in wind power generation and offers huge potential to the market players to capitalize on. China has a target of 5,000 megawatts of wind capacity by 2010 and 30,000 megawatts of capacity by 2020.
The story is similar in the case of India, where the government is planning to expand their wind energy capacity significantly, in the near future, with many domestic companies like Suzlon Energy India Ltd., NEPC Micon Ltd., GMR Industries etc., positioning themselves to explore this new opportunity.
