Threat of climate change finally being recognized – Tony Blair

08/Oct/2006: After the latest session of a round of negotiations between the world’s biggest polluting countries, Tony Blair said that the world has finally started to recognize the scale of threat posed by climate change.

These negotiations were initiated by Mr. Blair last year, at the G8 summit in Gleneagles in Scotland. But even as he spoke, the British Environmental David Miliband was telling the world that more investments on technologies that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, was the need of the day.

Mr. Miliband, speaking in Monterrey, Mexico, after the talks ended, said that progress was being made in this regard, but more efforts are required to tackle the threat posed by climate change. He added that there needs to be a substantial expansion of the global carbon market.

According to Mr. Miliband, without any future action, the carbon dioxide emissions could rise by over 137% by 2050, from its levels in 2003, fuelled by the increasing use of coal in power generation, oil-based transport fuels and rapid economic growth in countries with vast coal reserves. He said that, ‘business as usual’ approach will not help in addressing this crisis.

However, Mr. Blair was very enthusiastic about the fact that the talks were actually progressing. He said that the involvement of America and developing countries like China and India, in these talks, is very important to the future of this planet.

Mr. Blair added that the current talks on climate change are important indicators of the desire of the world to come together and deal with the issue of energy and environment, to make sure that there is sustainable growth in the future.
