Asian economies could be doomed by climate change
09/Oct/2006: A new climate change report by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Australia’s main research agency, warns that higher temperatures and rising sea levels could devastate Asian economies, displacing millions of people and putting many more at risk to infectious diseases.
The report predicts that the global temperatures would increase by 2 degree Celsius by the year 2030, particularly in arid regions of Asia’s largest economies like China and India. The report warns that unless the governments in this region initiate immediate actions to curb greenhouse gas emissions, there will not be any room for optimism to cut down the effects of climate change in this region.
Millions of people would be put at risk to malaria, dengue, cholera and other infectious diseases, due to changes in rainfall patterns and warmer temperatures that might trigger more tropical cyclones, intense monsoons and floods, according to this climate report.
The report also predicts that people living in low-lying coastal areas in countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China and in pacific islands like French Polynesia, could become displaced as the sea levels in these regions could rise up to 50 centimeters (20 inches) in the next 65 years.
This report, which was commissioned by a range of environmental, church and non-governmental organizations, said that the local and regional economies in the Asia-Pacific region would be badly hard from chronic food and water insecurity, extreme weather and epidemic diseases.
This climate report urged the Australian government to support the developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region by helping them in their preparations for large-scale natural disasters and in the development of renewable energy sources. It also wants the Australian government to review its immigration laws, to accommodate people displaced by climate change.
