It’s here – Water Crisis!

A 5 year analysis of global water resources by scientists has reported than more than one third of the world’s population is living in water shortage areas. This situation which was expected to hit us in 2025 is now here said Mr. Frank Rijsberman the director general of the International Water Management Institute in Battaramulla, Sri Lanka, at the recent World Water Week 2006 in Stockholm, Sweden.

The new study has reported that water was primarily used for agriculture, cattle farming and fisheries. Agriculture alone takes up 74% of water from rivers, lakes and aquifers. Mr. Rijsberman also went on to express the problems faced by certain countries like sub – Saharan Africa where the lack of technology has inhibited the potential to access groundwater where else in Gujarat in India, decades of groundwater extractions have left local resources with virtually nothing.

Therefore some changes need to be made so that people do not rely heavily on water demanding crops like change of diet and desalinating sea water for irrigation use.
