UK To Introduce New Recycling System

30/Aug/2006: A report in enviornment ministry states that "pay as you throw" systems to be introduced will improve on the UK's current recycling rates.

The environmental group said on Sunday that the UK is still "bottom of Europe's recycling heap" along with Greece and Portugal.

UK's recycling rate is at 18%. In fact, the recycling rate for England was already at 22.5% in the financial year 2004/05, while in Scotland it reached 22.8% in the calendar year 2005. If this system is implemented in UK the department will only just meet the 2005 household waste recycling target of 25% originally set in 2000.

The UK is bottom of the heap in Europe when it comes to recycling. Local authorities are asking the government to give them power to charge for collecting non-recyclable waste.
