A Permanent Tsunami
30/Aug/2006: There’s a place called Malasiga in Papua New Guinea. Electric wires don’t run through this place, there’s no factory there, and no one owns a refigerator in the whole of Malasiga. Its population is just 400. In fact, Malasiga can rank the first in a list of Top Ten Ozone-Friendly places on the Earth.
Trouble is: Malasiga may well be devoured and wiped off the face of the earth by the sea.
Last week, researchers came and concluded that the sea is coming to engulf Malasiga. The reasons given are that the sea levels are rising due to global warming and global warming is rising because 15% of the world’s population who live in rich countries spread 75% of the total carbon monoxide and greenhouse gasses. That is why poor Malagisa is under threat.
So, the people of Malagisa can gaze forlornly at the sea and watch it coming closer to their homes, and then further on to invade the land that has been home to their ancestors. Until Malagisa is made an example of the harmful effects of global warming, the party shall continue.
