Air Pollution at Factory Farms to Be Controlled
A nationwide survey on the air pollutants emitted by US livestock feeding will be made this winter by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The survey will be conducted to ensure that all clean air laws are abided by the feeding farmers. Two final agreements for voluntarily being part of the study to observe their air emissions were approved by the agency. Agreements for 1,856 swine, 468 dairy, 204 egg-laying and 40 broiler chicken operations from 6,300 farms were approved. It will take the EPA 18 months to complete the survey and to produce a report on how the feeding operations can utilize their emissions and what needs to be done in order to comply with the proper federal regulations. Certain enforcement actions will also not be taken against voluntary participating feeding operations said the EPA. They also mentioned that once the guidelines have been published, feeding operations that violate the guidelines would have to bear a penalty that could be anywhere from USD$200 to US$100,000 depending on the quantity of animals that are being maintained.
