Over a million cars scrapped illegally in Britain
31/Aug/2006: Britain seems to have a major environmental hazard on its hands with up to 1.5 million cars being scrapped illegally every year.
The EU legislation introduced in 2003 in this regards seems to have fallen on deaf ears, as statistics indicate that close to 2 million cars were being scrapped but only 250,000 had received certificates of destruction.
Industry experts cite that this issue means 18,000 tonnes of vehicle fluids and batteries could be being dumped annually, keeping in mind that this is only in Britain.
Legitimate operators also seem to have trouble competing with illegal counterparts who are available a dime a dozen.
