California to become 1st US state to cap emissions
31/Aug/2006: Owing to a deal reached by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, California is set to cut emissions by 25% by 2020.
The proposed tough new legislature will impose a cap on greenhouse gas emissions and will be voted on today.
It forces major industries to cut down on their output of CO2 and other gases and even enables them to trade emission credits.
However, Schwarzegger's move in this regard was met with opposition, with state officials insisting that a nationwide move would be more appropriate, and not a state-by-state approach.
California , the most populous state in the US, is the world's 12th largest emitter of greenhouse gases.
