Caribbean to face more storms in future!
31/Aug/2006: According to a report by a coalition of environment and aid groups, Latin America and the Caribbean are prone to more natural disasters in future because of climate change and environmental degradation. The report adds that the weather in this region will get more extreme and less predictable.
The report called, ‘Up in Smoke?’ has provided enough evidence to prove that the livelihood of millions of residents of this region is at risk. Since most of the ecosystems in this region are depleted by illegal logging and deforestation, it would struggle to adapt to the sudden changes in the climate like ‘Increased intensity of tropical storms and hurricanes’ across the region.
The author of this report, Andrew Simms, from the New Economic Foundation (NEF), said that climate change in this region will have a significant impact on the global efforts to eradicate poverty in this region, which is dependent on agriculture, as extreme climatic conditions are becoming more severe and at the same time permanent.
The coalition (which includes Green Peace, Tearfund and WWF) that came up with this report have called for addressing three main challenges, namely,
Reversing and stopping global warming Living with global warming, which is inevitable Developing a ‘Climate Friendly’ framework that delivers an equal share of natural resources to all sections of the society.
